 lla women formed the La Jolla Reading Club. In 1955\, the City of San Dieg
 o agreed to take over the operation of the library as one of its public li
 brary branches\, and rented the space from the Library Association of La J
 olla\, or Athenaeum Music & Arts Library\, as it became known from then on
 . The Athenaeum is one of only 17 nonprofit membership libraries remaining
  in the United States\, and one of three west of the Mississippi. The Athe
 naeum Music & Arts Library currently has more than 1\,700 member household
